Grundy County Extension and Outreach is offering a class to introduce residents to emerald ash borer and the risks it poses for the ash tree population in our area. Class will be held Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 6:30 7:30 p.m. at the Grundy County Extension Office at 703 F Avenue, Suite 1, Grundy Center.

EAB has been found in several Iowa counties as well as 24 other states. EAB kills all ash tree species and is considered one of the most destructive tree pests ever seen in North America.

A statewide quarantine restricting the movement of hardwood firewood, ash logs, wood chips and ash tree nursery stock out of Iowa into non-quarantined areas of other states was issued in February of 2014.

The Iowa EAB Team determined that a whole state approach to the quarantine is warranted at this time. "Communities need to focus on planning and implementing proactive measures to prepare for EAB in their urban forest," said state entomologist Robin Pruisner of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

This class will focus on the basics of the emerald ash borer, how to determine whether treatments are necessary for your ash trees and help to expand your knowledge of the pest and what your risks are.

This program is being offered at no charge. Please call the Grundy County Extension office at 319-824-6979 to register or e-mail Shari at sellbakk@iastate.edu. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required.
