The diary of an Illinois Civil War Soldier will be presented at the Grundy County Heritage Museum's Spring event on Sunday, March 19, 2017 from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, with presentation at 2 PM.

Harlen Persinger, a Grundy Center native, will be presenting the Civil War diary of James Miller, 1st Lieutenant, Company H, 65th Illinois Infantry, also known as the Scottish Regiment.

James Miller was born in Scotland, lived in Chicago, and enlisted in the Army in 1862.

The Civil War diary is dated from January 1, 1864 to mid-August 1864 and has exquisite penmanship which took a considerable amount of time to decipher. Mr. Miller fought in several campaigns and was ultimately wounded in the thigh in the Battle of Franklin in November 1864.

Harlen Persinger, a renowned Photo Journalist, Freelancer and Farmer, was raised on a dairy farm south of Grundy Center where he graduated from High School. He went on to Iowa State University, where he received his commission in the US Army and served a tour in the Vietnam War. In addition to the Civil War diary, Mr. Persinger will share with the audience his experience in the Vietnam War and the friends he made along the way.

Please join us for an hour or two at the Grundy County Heritage Museum and enjoy the presentations, and museum displays. Beverages and bars will be served.

The Grundy County Heritage Museum is jointly managed by the Grundy County Conservation Board and Historical Collections of Grundy County.
